Babbel for Android!

Posted on March 26, 2012 by

After just a few delays, Babbel is available in the Google Play Store as an Android app!

Babbel Android was one of our users’ most common requests, and we are delighted to finally make this dream come true. Now all of you out there with Android devices no longer have to wait to take advantage mobile learning with Babbel. We’d like to give a big thank you again to our beta testers, whose feedback had a direct impact on improving the app. We’re super happy with the results and we hope you’ll have a lot of fun with the new apps and learn a lot, too!

What can the Babbel app for Android do?
The app includes the Basic and Advanced Vocabulary with 2000-3000 words for each learning language. As usual, all vocabulary packages are organized by topic and presented audio-visually (spoken out loud by native speakers and illustrated with pictures). You can decide which themes interest you the most, and get started right away.

We’ve also optimized out speech recognition software and integrated it into the Android apps. It will now be even more effective in analyzing your pronunciation and helping you practice. Of course, the popular Review Manager is also on board—presenting you words you’ve learned for review in ideal intervals, so that what you’ve studied permanently embeds itself in you long-term memory. You don’t need a constant internet connection for the Babbel apps, so you can study vocabulary easily and flexibly—at home or on the go.

How much do the Babbel Android apps cost?
The Android apps are completely free for all eleven languages and can be downloaded from the Google Play Store. The first lesson from every category is ready to be studied right after download. To download additional vocabulary packages and use the intelligent review manager, you’ll need a free Babbel account, which you can sign up for directly on the app. If you already have a Babbel account, then you can simply log into the app, download everything you’d like to learn and go.

Should I expect ads in the app, since it’s free?

No. You shouldn’t be distracted by advertising. Babbel remains, as always, an ad-free premium product.

What’s next?

Those of you who are familiar with Babbel know that the Basic and Advanced Vocabulary is just a small part of what Babbel has to offer. Product innovation and product development are still dominant themes at Babbel. The Mobile Team has already begun with the development of new apps that will bring more features and courses to mobile devices. Our Content Team is also busy working on new lessons and courses. Very promising!

Hello Leila,

Thanks for your message! Please contact Babbel customer service directly at for further assistance.

Hi! I just downloaded the babbel German app on my nexus 7. I cannot download any of the lessons. Help please!

Your voice recognition doesn’t work on either of my Android devices. It works on my laptop. But I don’t want to carry around my big laptop. I contacted your Support but they just gave me suggestions that I had already tried..

Android App is great. I often use it during long train journeys. Since network coverage is usually poor or non existent i appreciate the lesson download feature. Nevertheless, I couldn’t find a feature, which allows me to load the files to sd card. This should be standard with current android versions, especially when dealing with relatively large files. Even moving the app itself to SD-Card leaves the lesson data on the phone. There are still phones with only few internal memory, where this matters.

Excellent goods from you, man. I have bear in mind your stuff previous to and you’re just ttoo excellent.
I aactually like what you have acquired here, certainly like what you are stating and the way during which
you are saying it. You make it entertaining and yoou contfinue to care for to kdep iit smart.

I can’t wait to read much more from you. Thiss is actually a
wonderful website.

I’ve had Babbel on my android phone for about two years, and had about 200Mb worth of lessons and vocabulary and it was free, and I would rave about it to everyone. I had to do a reset on my phone and now its changed to this pay rubbish. Shove it up your arse.

I go to see day-to-day a few blogs and blogs to read articles, but this web site presents quality based writing.

I have downloaded Spanish Babbel on my I pad and recently downloaded the latest version but it keeps crashing. I have done the turn off and reboot trick with no success. I cant get beyond certain parts of lessons. Its very frustrating.

Hello Rick – could you send us an email at Hopefully we can help you out.

Hi,this is venus.
I wanted u to help me find the older version of french babbel to download.
I searched for the old version but i couldn’t find

Hi Venus – could you send an email to They’ll help you out.

Hi, I have purchased in app access for 1 month at 10,99$. After purchasing I do not have access to any content. It requests to purchase a plan wich I have already done.
Contacting your support was of no help as no response and no solutions were provided.

Your product seems very good but I would like to have what I have paid for

Hi Kevin – just spoke with Support and I believe the issue’s been resolved. Hope it’s all working now.

Do i need to buy all lessons to learn german language from the 2 lesson onwards.when i go to second lesson to get access it’s directly redirecting me to payment this a paid app all inside .And it is more expensive.

Hi Sai – yes, we offer a paid subscription service. First lesson is free, and then when you buy a subscription you get access to all the German courses. If you’d like more information, please send us a message at Thanks!

Is there any way i can find the older version of Spanish app ?This new one is pretty bulky and heavy for my phone.

Hi Aditya, you can find old versions of the apps – vocabulary trainers only, not with all of the new features available to subscribers – in the amazon App Store. But please be aware that they are old, and as such may be buggy / glitchy.

And this may be of use:

Hi, I downloaded the french app and have so far loved the first part and would love to use it more, but I cannot because it will not let me activate it though my babbel account. Every time I try and log in it tells me there is a network error. Because of this I have not been able to save any progress or continue past the drinks part. Is there any way to fix this?

Hi Abby. The best thing to do is send an email to – and even better would be to send us a private message on Facebook, that way we can help you as quickly as possible.

LIES! This app is NOT free and it auto-updated, making me lose all of the lessons I already had and now expecting me to pay for access. I’m ashamed of your company!

Hi Michelle – if you go to ‘Courses’ and then ‘Words and sentences’, you’ll find all your old content, free and accessible.

Hi Robert. I suspect this problem has been resolved, but if not you can always send an email to Cheers.

Hi. I have the Galaxy Note 2 running Android 4.3. On my device, this app crashes constantly and then tells me the app is not installed. I have re installed many times, I’ve done a factory data reset on my device but nothing I have tried has made this app work. If the app worked I would gladly pay the monthly subscription fee but without the app, Babble is useless to me. I can’t get to a computer to use this program, I have to use the app.

“Deepen Your Knowledge” crash for my nexus 5. Any plan for this bug?

I have a problem as well in “Deepen your knowledge” as well when the app crashes. I have Nexus 5 google phone

Hi Amirab, thanks for your comment. If you let know, they can help you out.

I’m having the same problem as Peter, I’m afraid. It’s only recently started – it used to work without a hitch – but now it crashes in ‘Deepen your knowledge’ every time it gets to the sentences. Very frustrating on what is an otherwise excellent app.

Hi Brian, thanks for the feedback. I’ve notified and they are working to resolve the issue. If you’ve any other questions or concerns please shoot them an email.

Hi,I want to download it,but this app is not available in China ….so I can’t get the courses.

I also have the problem in “Deepen Your Knowledge” where it crashes all the time. I have Android, Droid Ultra Motorola phone

I am having problem with this app on my Nexus 7. When in “Deepen your knowledge” where the part is where you have to fill a word in a sentence this app crashes on me all the time. I tried it on all the languages on android store and this bug is in all of them.

Hola. Lamentablemente no entiendo el termino gratis, Si cuando descargue Babbel despues de la primera leccion seme aparecio una ventana donde me indicaba que tenia que comprar las demas lecciones. Gracias

When i try to synch the vocabulary on my android operated phone, i get an error message that the sync has failed. I am connected on the internet as suggested by the error message. No success in updating and sync with my iPad.

Please advise!

Hello Babbel!

I am using app on Ipad mini(Ios 7.03), but doesent work at this moment(drop)! Why?

Can’t download packages on Android. I get a timeout error, please help. I’ve tried mailing the babbel support but no response.

Hi Muaaz, hopefully that’s been resolved now – please let us know if not. Thanks.

I am using the Android app. It does not appear to sync between devices (phone and tablet). Should it? Will it ever?

Hi George, please get in touch with our customer support at so they can help you. Thanks.

I downloaded the german app to my Motorola MB525, but when I download other language packages, the audio doesn’t work. It does, however, with the courses that come with the app. What could be causing this error?

Hi Daniel,
Please contact our customer service team at and mention your account email and the app version so they can help you.

I have just encountered the same problem. What happens now? It’s very frustrating as I am keen to get going and have just paid for 6 months!

is there any way i can download the packages not through my device but directly and then access them using babbel software?

Hi Arun – can help you.

I am using the app for a few months already. I have upgraded my Android, reinstalled the app. In the review manager things are just like I left them before, which is great, but when I go to vocabulary, the items that I did before, are not checked.

Now if I do them again they will add to the ones I did before, having now two times the same words in the review manager. This happened to me once, I went online with my laptop and deleted all and started from scratch. I made by mistake a cold restart (or something like that) and I had to reinstall all the apps from my phone. So I am again in the same situation.

Is there a way to have, the ones I did, checked in my vocabulary? Otherwise all is smooth, bug free and high quality stuff.

thank you in advance

Hi Chris, will be able to help you out.

But who can tell me how to download all of the vocabulary packages by ONLY once?
Or I must download the packages one by one ? T^T

I have purchased 3 months online French Courses and certainly plan to purchase more. You have a fantastic service with ease and instant results. I have also downloaded the app to accompany me when I’m on the go. However, every attempt to download any of the packages under any category results in the same error: (after 5-6 sec’s wait time): DOWNLOAD FAILED The Operation Timed Out,. I have attempted these downloads while using my WIFI and while on my wireless network and with the same issue. Here are all the spec’s I can think of as being relative in hopes of a prompt resolve.

Using a Samsung HTC Hero ANDROID
Wireless Provider is Telus (Canada)

Thank you in advance for your time and efforts.
Warmest Regards,
or directly through Babbel Inbox.

Am using ssumg galaxy tab 10.1
When i do beginners course 2 the pictures are very faded and i cant see the microphone listening to what i am saying, i just get stuck at this level and it wont move on in the lesson.
Is this a flash player issue? I have just installed adobe flash 11 but like i said the pictures i need to touch are faded and althoug i can touch the picture and it says what it is in spanish, that is all i get

Hi Ryan – if this is still an issue you can send an email to Hopefully it’s been resolved by now.

Hi, I love this app, had an unexpexted invitation to France in a few weeks, so trying to learn enough frech to get by in a short time, and this is perfect. It is on my Nexus 7. Only trouble is, I just downloaded the rest of the volcabulary for food and drink and the programme just flashes on and off continually. I already have the app for Portugese (going in October, so stopped using for now) which gives no trouble. How can I stop this continual flashing, because I’m really dissapointed that I can’t use the app.

I have also had problems downloading additional vocabulary (Babbel Spanish for Kindle Fire).

I was able to download all vocabulary listed under “most important 100 words”, but the download fails when I attempt to download any additional content for the remaining categories.

I get an error popup, all it does is confirm the error and give the name of the package it was attempting to download.

I am able synchronize with the Babbel website to review vocabulary – the problem appears only with new downloads.

It says an error has occurred downloading from

Hi Jose,

Hi, I have downloaded the free android app, and would love to become a suscriber, however I would need to have full access via an app. Is this going to be happening in the near future? and if so, will everything be available offline? Thanks

Hi guys
I love the German app but unfortunately, despite making an account, I can’t download all of the content (it says download timed out and doesn’t go past 0/100 downloads)
Any info to fix this would be much appreciated!

Hi Ryan,
Android versions older than 2.3.5 are not supported by the Babbel app. Therefore, please check your Android version via the following on your device: “Settings” => “”About phone” => “Android version”
Let me know if that helps!

Babbel Team

Also eagerly waiting for the Android version. You’d have a premium subscriber straight away as far as I’m concerned. Would be nice to have widgets in the app too. Good work!

Is there any news regarding the “Whats next?” section of this blog post? I know that the iPad version does provide full access to the courses etc.
Unfortunately the Android app has not been updated at all. That is kind of surprising if you have a look at the worldwide market-share of Android compared to iOS.

How far is the development of the Android App?

Just started using the app as im a subscriber on the computer version of Spanish babbel; this says that as a subscriber I should get all the content free? I am able to review 9 items and then once that is completed it says to ‘unlock full features visit website or send an email to my address’ I’ve tried to do this but am not receiving any emails and I can’t find anything on the website. How do I get full access? Many thanks

Might you have further posts just like this particular 1 named, Babbel for Android!

| The Babbel Blog? I actually wish to read through even a
lot more regarding it. Many thanks.

great app and a great way to build a vocabulary quickly. review manager after an intial good start now only reviews the same words over and over, small but persistent and annoying glitch

Hi Morgan,
Thanks for letting us know! The mobile team is already working on updates and fixes bugs quite fast.

The Babbel Team

Very good article. I certainly appreciate this website.
Stick with it!

Can the Android App be used on my HTC(RADAR) WINDOWS phone????
I’m so excited about this app; I hope so…..

It is very good!
But I have one problem. I downloaded all vocabulary topics for offline use, but can NOT find where in my phone they are saved? And how big they are? I was searching with Astro , but can not find them! What if I want to delete them? They are many.
Please HELP!

Once u get past the basics auto downloaded is the rest of the vocabulary free?

Yes. The content of for the Android Apps is free.

I was so glad to hear about this app, and of course I downloaded it immediately…
But on my HTC desire, it doesn’t work at this moment.
When I click on ‘Review Manager’, I get a small window telling me ‘receive learned vocabulary’. Once that it completely, I shortly see a window telling me ‘load data’, and than the screen goes black and I go back to the screen with ‘vocabulary’, ‘review manager’ and ‘Other apps’. When I try the review manager again, the same proces repeats. In the background, greyed out, I see ‘Review now! You should repeat 1 of 550 items’
Indeed, 1 was the number of items I had to repeat today, but my vocabulary consist of 1339 words… (550 or 1139… I can’t repeat anyone of them….)

Hello Anne,

I’ve talked to the mobile team and our developers were able to reproduce and fix this error. It should be resolved with the next update!
Regarding your vocabulary, the reason is that the mobile version of the review manager currently only counts single words, while the web-version includes phrases and sayings as well.
